Topaz is one of the most valued stones. Its name comes from Zebirget Island, the ancient island of Topazos, in the Red Sea. Its high light refraction gives it a great shine. Topazes come in a wide range of colors depending on the variation of iron and chromium in their chemical composition. Although their tones are always soft, we find yellow or pink topazes (roses are very precious). The blue ones come in different shades: the lightest one is called Sky, the sky-colored one is called Swiss and the darkest, a navy blue, is London. A topaz weighing nearly 100 kg was found in Ukraine in 1965, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington owns cut topazes weighing several thousand carats each.
