Ruby is one of the most desired natural stones throughout history. It is the red sister of the sapphire and both belong to the corundum family. The deep red color of rubies is due to chromium, and the fact that they often have more violet or darker hues depends on the amount of iron they contain. Its appearance is silky and glassy at the same time, seducing whoever looks at it and whoever wears it! One of the characteristics that best define this red gem is its hardness, a 9 on the Mohs scale. This means that, after diamond, with a hardness of 10, the hardest gems are corundums (rubies and sapphires). Large natural rubies are very rare.
Do you know that the largest ruby of the moment is owned by a Chinese jewelry firm and weighs more than 8kg? The most expensive was auctioned in Geneva on May 12, 2015, weighing 25.59 carats! As an anecdote, we can also tell you that Michael Jackson's famous white glove containing rubies was auctioned off in favor of non-profit organizations. Ruby red is associated with power, passion, fire and divinity. Also with strength, eroticism, seduction, happiness and good luck.
