Els Tinars, a prize-winning track record

In 1978, when the restaurant Els Tinars opened its doors on the main road to Sant Feliu and Platja d’Aro, where it’s still located today, long queues used to form on Sunday in the summer. Els Tinars, or Can Gascons as it’s popularly known, was already renowned as a restaurant that knew exactly what it was doing.

Now Marc Gascons gives the orders in the kitchen while his sister, Elena, attends to diners with the same professionalism as their parents who started up the current restaurant. But it was their grandparents who took the very first step in catering, so Marc and Elena are actually the third generation to enthusiastically tackle the world of gastronomy.

Like a true tightrope walker, Marc Gascons has skilfully struck a balance between traditional cuisine and the creativity that dominates 21st-century cooking, giving rise to a cuisine with “the taste of tradition”, welcomed by fans of both styles. Perusing the menu, you’re spoilt for choice between the more traditional fare or Marc’s rejuvenated creations; but whichever you choose, you’ll be delighted!

In the dining room, Elena has the same welcoming unpretentiousness as the setting. Els Tinars has that wonderful kind of decor that makes you feel at home without quite knowing why, a harmonious place without any discordant notes, which is convivial but select, affable but distinguished.

Today that main road has become a fast dual carriageway, taking the traffic from Barcelona and Girona to the heart of the Costa Brava, and the restaurant is still a bystander of this incessant toing and froing, especially at weekends and during the summer months. It goes without saying that, whether you’re on your way out or home, it’s worth popping in to Els Tinars; but it’s also well worth a deliberate visit. It’s the ideal setting for a special moment, for lunch with the delight of the daytime or a dinner with the complicity of the night.
