Tanzanite is one of most valuous gemstones and, at the same time, a rare one. Is is only possible to find it in one location: in the Merelani hills, Northern Tanzania at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. This blue-violet gemstone was discovered by a Masai tribesman, but it was not till 1967, when Manuel D’souza, a tailor and gold and gemstone prospector in his free time, make it popular. This gem is a variety of Zoisite. In nature, tanzanite occurs in several colors, from blue to violet. Prices vary considerably: the higher degree of violet saturation, the greater value. It is a delicate gemstone: 6,5-7 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
